Yesterday we stopped by the store after picking up Peter from preschool and even though Ned was being rotten (screaming that he wanted to go home the entire time), I just couldn't resist - I had to buy a few seeds and plant starter kit. This is probably one of the things that made me agree to wood paneled walls - I won't have to be looking at them constantly because we will have a small yard with a few spaces to grow things. I'm hoping to do some tomatoes and peppers (I'll probably just buy some plants of those), squash, zucchini, pumpkins, beets, and some flowers, of course. Having a garden was such a big part of my childhood - my grandpa always planted a huge garden and the harvest got shared with family, friends, and neighbors. I really do love being outside and working in dirt and I just can't wait for this part of our new place.
We are going to drive out to see the house again this week and take some measurements and pictures (yes I will show them if you promise not to tell me I'm crazy!) so I can really start planning and doing a few things. I have so many ideas floating around in my head that last night I was so worked up about them that I couldn't sleep. I really think I might be able to pull this off and I'm not even planning on covering up all of the wood paneling...just trying going to go with it. We found out that the landlady's husband has a sentimental connection to the wood paneling because it reminds him of his childhood home in Spain. I'm still not sure about it (he's not the one living there - don't you think they would be more concerned about making it appealing to renters?), but I can respect that so I don't want to take a chance at damaging the walls. And besides, it's a creative challenge to make that wood paneling look good - a challenge that I'm actually getting really excited about!
And here's something totally off topic - if you are interested in what I did in my former life as a molecular biologist, check it out here.
Whoa, I think you just blew my mind....yes, with the genetics, but also with the fact that someone has sentimental attachment to wood paneling!

Oooh! Congrats on the published paper! Wow. Wood paneling isn't SO bad is it? It darkens things, but it doesn't have to ruin things. I kind of like it, but I guess I'm weird. Mybe it is because of my European experiences. Hmmm. I'm so excited you get to plant a garden again. I should do that this year, but babies just make everything 10x harder--especially the third one! Next year.

Maybe you will just spend so much time out in your garden that you will never see the wood paneling!

how very exciting to have a garden! I love having one.
I'm sure you'll come up with some creative to cover up the walls. You'll make it look beautiful, even if they are crazy for not thinking of the tenants!! ;)

The title on the paper is amazing. I can't imagine trying to read the whole paper!

Jessi - you can definitely make anything anything look good! And you can get used to anything - remember that yellow and blue bathroom I had in SugarHouse? I barely noticed it after a while. Is that a good thing?
